What Do Our Educational Psychologists Do?

Educational Psychologists (EPs) help us understand how children and young people think, learn, feel, and grow. At AfC Virtual School, our EPs focus on identifying and reducing barriers to learning—whether those are academic, social, emotional, behavioural, physical, or sensory.

Using a consultation-based model, they work collaboratively with school staff, carers, families, and other professionals to develop practical, sustainable solutions. Their goal is to support inclusion, promote psychological wellbeing, and raise educational outcomes for children in care across all ages and abilities.

How We Work

Most of our work takes place through consultation meetings, where we support those who know the child best—teachers, carers, social workers—to generate and implement effective strategies.

In some cases, direct work with a child or young person may be appropriate. This might include:

  • Observations

  • Dynamic or play-based assessments

  • Therapeutic approaches
This is always based on clear reasoning and agreed collaboratively during consultation.

Our Key Activities

We work across three levels—individual, group, and whole-school/organisational—through five core areas:

1. Consultation

  • Problem-solving with school staff, carers, and professionals

  • Promoting early intervention and joined-up thinking

2. Assessment

  • Understanding the child’s strengths and needs

  • Informing and guiding tailored interventions

3. Intervention

  • Delivering individual or group-based support

  • Therapeutic work and skill-building (e.g. social skills, managing anxiety)

4. Research

  • Evaluating and improving the effectiveness of interventions

  • Contributing to evidence-based practice

5. Training

  • Delivering CPD for staff and workshops for carers and parents

  • Supporting schools to build inclusive, trauma-informed environments
