IRO
What is an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO)?
An Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) is responsible for chairing reviews for children who are in the care of the local authority. Their role is to ensure that the best decisions and actions are taken to meet the needs of the young person. The IRO ensures that the care plan is followed and that the voice of the young person is listened to and respected.
Each young person is assigned an IRO when they come into care. In addition to chairing their reviews and hearing their views, the IRO makes certain that everyone involved carries out their responsibilities in the child’s best interests. The IRO also ensures the young person understands their care plan and any changes that may occur.
Joint Working Between the Virtual School and IROs
The Virtual School and IRO team work closely together to support the education of Children in Care. The IRO reviews the ePEP (electronic Personal Education Plan) during the Looked After Child’s Review and liaises with the Virtual School to discuss any concerns or issues that arise.
The Virtual School provides training and advice to the IRO team and values their partnership in improving educational outcomes for Children Looked After.
