Supporting Stable, High-Quality Education for Children in Care

“Children in care should, wherever possible, have uninterrupted educational placements in good or outstanding schools that meet their individual needs.”
The Educational Achievement of Children in Care, Joint Paper (December 2015)

At AfC Virtual School, we recognise that improving educational outcomes for children in care cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires strong, collaborative partnerships across a broad network of professionals. By working together to reduce school moves, improve attendance, minimise exclusions, and celebrate achievements, we can raise attainment and enhance life chances for these young people.

We value the essential contributions of Teachers, Social Workers, Carers, Educational Psychologists, Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs), Governors, CAMHS practitioners, and many others who support our children and young people.

A key statutory responsibility—and a core commitment in our mission—is fostering effective joint working. AfC Virtual School staff regularly participate in meetings and conferences across local authorities and schools to advocate for the educational needs of children in care.

We offer a comprehensive programme of training and extend support to professionals working with our young people, wherever they are placed, including those outside our borough. We encourage you to get in touch if you work with children and young people in our care.

Thanks to this united approach and shared commitment, educational outcomes for our children and young people continue to improve.

“We work together with partners to ensure that the educational achievements of looked-after children are recognised as a priority by everyone responsible for promoting their welfare.”
