IRO

What is an IRO?

An IRO is the person who chairs reviews for children who are in care of the local authority. Their role exists to ensure that the best decisions and actions are taken to meet the needs of the young person. They will make sure that the care plan is followed and that the voice of the young person is listened to and respected.

Each young person will be appointed an IRO when they come into care and in addition to chairing the review and listening to the young person’s views, they will make sure that people carry out the actions they have been given to act in the child’s best interests. IRO’s will also ensure that the young person understands their care plan and any changes that may take place.

Virtual School and IRO joint working

The Virtual School and IRO team work closely together to support the education of Children in Care.  The IRO examines the ePEP document during the Looked After Child's Review and liaises with the Virtual School to discuss any matters arising.

The Virtual School provides training and advice for the IRO team and value their partnership in raising educational outcomes for Children Looked After.
