Virtual School for the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames
& the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead

Welcome to Your Virtual School Journey

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now!” —Goethe

At AfC Virtual School, we believe in your potential. When you come into care, we’ll work closely with Social Care and your current school to do everything we can to keep things stable — because we know how important that is. Our goal is to help you do well in education, giving you more choices and opportunities later in life.

You’ll be a member of AfC Virtual School for as long as you’re in care — whether you're learning in Richmond or as far away as Scotland!

Changing Schools? We've Got You

Sometimes a move means changing schools. If that happens, we’ll work with your old and new school to make sure:

  • Your teachers understand your strengths

  • You have the right support in place from day one

  • You're never starting from scratch — we’re always thinking ahead for you.

You’ve Got a Team Behind You

At the heart of AfC Virtual School is a team that really cares about how you’re doing. You’ll be supported by:

  • An Assistant Headteacher from AfC Virtual School who acts as your Educational Case Worker

  • A Designated Teacher at your school — specially trained by us to support your learning and wellbeing

You’ll probably see your Assistant Headteacher in school from time to time, working alongside your teachers to make sure you’re getting what you need.

Your Personal Education Plan (ePEP)

Every term, we’ll have a meeting to check in on your progress — your Personal Education Plan meeting (or ePEP for short).

This isn’t just any meeting — it’s a mini celebration of how far you’ve come. It’s attended by people who care about your learning, including:

  • Your Carer

  • Your Social Worker

  • Your Designated Teacher

  • Sometimes, your Assistant Headteacher from the Virtual School

And you’re the VIP guest. You’ll talk about what’s going well, what support you need, and help set goals for the next few months — especially around English and Maths. You can even lead the meeting if you’d like!

There’s a section just for your voice on the ePEP form — make sure to fill it in! Your Assistant Headteacher always reads it and wants to hear your thoughts.

Funding for Your Education

As your Headteacher, I make sure your school receives extra funding to support your learning. Sometimes we can offer additional help too — so if there’s something you need, ask your teacher or get in touch.

More Ways We Support You

We use our funding to provide:

  • One-to-one support from specialist staff

  • Fun resource parcels (for Years 4–8) with games, books and activities

  • AfC Virtual School Summer School

  • Radio Aspire — our very own children-in-care radio station

  • University visits, Drama sessions, and much more!

Ask your Carer to contact us for more information about what’s available — we’d love for you to get involved.
